Who snores?
Snoring is one of the most common sleep-related problems. Approximately 42% of the population snores. 60% of men and 40% of women between 40 and 65 snore. Snoring can occur alone and is described here as social snoring. More serious is the snoring disorder called obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. There are only approximately 2% of the population who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea.

Why do we snore?
It is generally accepted that regular snoring does not affect your health. The cause of snoring can be found in a contraction of the upper respiratory tract. When the tongue relax during sleep, it drops back against the back wall of the pharynx, thus preventing the air passage, where the air velocity increases. This triggers a vibration of the soft palate and the lumen (neck diameter).

Is there anyone who snore more than others?
Snoring is aggravated by obesity, or when you have been drinking alcohol or used sleeping pills. Studies have also found that snoring is twice as common among smokers as among nonsmokers. In extreme cases, snoring is equivalent to the sound of a diesel engine or a barking dog.

Factors that can aggravate snoring:
Alcohol: Alcohol in the blood affects the respiratory center in the brain, neck muscles relaxe so that the tissue in the throat swells.
Drugs: Muscle relaxantia, sedative drugs and sleeping pills has the same effect as alcohol as long as they are in the body.
Physical fatigue: After a prolonged physical exertion, you are more tired than usual and the rest reduces muscle tension, including neck muscles.
Obesity: Obesity increases the risk for snoring and sleep apnea. If obesity increases fat deposits in the neck while the neck diameter (lumen) decreases, especially when lying down. A reduction in weight can reduce both tendency of apné and snoring.
